About GunPlow

GunPlow is a home for those who live for the field — and everything that comes with it.

We write about the fine sporting life: wild birds, trained dogs, fine shotguns, Southern landscapes, and the timeless art of wingshooting. But more than that, we’re here for the stories, the craft, the camaraderie, and the pursuit of something richer than just a shot fired.

Think: grand old estates and rugged American backroads. Polished wood and muddy boots. The smell of gun oil and woodsmoke. Land Rovers and Ineos Grenadiers. A good dog by your side and a better story around the fire. That’s GunPlow.

You don’t have to be an expert to be here. Just someone who values heritage, craftsmanship, and doing things with care.

What to expect:

  • The Old Swede — our free newsletter: quick dispatches from the field, snapshots of gear, ideas, and inspiration

  • Journals — longer, more in-depth stories and essays for paid subscribers

  • The Podcast — field conversations with interesting people who share our love of land, dog, and gun

GunPlow is about more than wingshooting. It’s about living well, staying curious, and honoring tradition without being stuck in it.

We’re glad you’re here.

About Randy

I grew up on the rural outskirts of Paso Robles, California, where rolling hills and golden grasslands painted the backdrop of a childhood filled with curiosity. Though my family didn’t hunt, something about the rhythm of the land stirred a passion in me early on. That passion took shape in fifth grade, when a teacher offered a hunter safety course. I signed up immediately—and never looked back.

Dove hunts on cool September mornings and warm evenings on the Central Coast became my first taste of the field. But as time passed and my world expanded, so did my vision. There was a deeper elegance to game bird shooting, one woven into tradition, craftsmanship, and reverence. A Filson strap vest, which at the time cost more than my first shotgun, became a symbol of my devotion; I still wear it every season, 35 years on.

Somewhere along the way, I discovered the artistry of James Purdey & Sons. It wasn’t just the guns—it was the ethos, the heritage, the beauty of excellence forged by hand and passed down through generations.

That same spirit lives on in GunPlow and its newsletter, The Old Swede. I founded these projects to celebrate the fine sporting lifestyle—upland days afield, honest food from wild places, faithful dogs, the work of skilled gunmakers, and the stewardship of land. Through storytelling, recipes, and reverent tributes to the craftsmen and women who shape this tradition, I invite others to join a life marked by bonhomie and meaning.

Whether it’s a dew-soaked morning walk or an evening of laughter by a fire, I believe the best memories are made afield—with friends, with purpose, and with a deep respect for everything that makes the shooting life worth living.

Let’s begin.
